The Southern Indiana Operators Association has named the Florence Regional Sewer District as it's "Plant of the Year" in Class II.
Shannon Jackson, plant superintendent, said that each year representatives from the association come and inspect plants, grading each on a number of factors.
"They do inspections for about three days," she said. "They travel to the different plants and give awards for the four classes, and also for the 'Professional of the Year'. Classes are determined by size and volume, and we are a Class II facility."
Shannon Jackson said that Florence's inspection was completed a couple of weeks ago, and that the inspection covers the district's laboratory, as well as operation and maintenance.
"They have a list of questions and they also review reports if applicable," Shannon Jackson said. "We've won this award in the past (2010), and we've also won awards from the Alliance of Indiana Operators, so we're very proud of the work we do here in the community."
The Southern Indiana Operators Association covers all of the Southeast region of the state of Indiana, going as far north as Columbus, Franklin, and Shelbyville, overseeing all phases of a district's operations.
The association gives awards for excellence in all phases of operations - and the Florence Regional Sewer District continues to excel.
"When we accepted the award I told them that I can't argue with them," Shannon Jackson smiled. "We do have a really nice plant and we do take care of it. We appreciate that the county trusts us, and we want to be a model for other facilities, as well."
Shannon Jackson said that the district currently serves the town of Florence, and then west through the town of Markland - including handling Belterra Casino Resort and Spa.
Ronda Humphrey is the wastewater technician at the plant; and Danny Hehe serves as the maintenance technician.
