Each year the Switzerland County 4-H Fairboard recognizes members of the community who have given of their time and efforts over the years to advance the 4-H program and help 4-H members. On Tuesday night, the fairboard honored Dale Simon as its Mr. Switzerland County for 2013. A longtime agriculture teacher at the high school and FFA advisor; he has long been active in the 4-H program here. Shown here at Tuesday night’ announcement are, from left: Queen’s Court member Chelsea Duvall; Little Miss Kyatalin Baker; Queen Emily White; Mr. Switzerland County Dale Simon; and Queen’s Court members Emily Evans and Macy Barwick.
For many years, the Switzerland County 4-H Fairboard has honored a Mrs. Switzerland County, in honor of years of service to the 4-H program. For the past three years, the fairboard has also chosen to honor a Mr. Switzerland County, a man in the community who has given of his time and efforts to further the 4-H program.
On Tuesday night at the swine show, Dale Simon was surprised by being named as the 2013 Mr. Switzerland honoree.
Public address announcer Sydney Sefton read off a list of accomplishments to the crowd before divulging who this year's Mr. Switzerland County was.
"He has served as an FFA chapter and District FFA advisor, Honorary FFA chapter, and State FFA honorary, as well as District and State Officers," she read. "He has assisted our youth in growing to be leaders of our community while engaging the life of agriculture."
She went on to tell the crowd that Dale Simon has also been supportive of agriculture through his service on the Soil and Water Board, and has been honored as that organization's Conservation Farmer of the Year.
"Leading by example, he believes in our agricultural life," Sydney Sefton continued. "He farms here in the county and loves his children, Liz, Gina, and Eric. His wife, Mary Ann, remains spiritually in his heart as he watches his children and grandchildren grow up."
This is the third time that a man has been honored as Mr. Switzerland County. Bill Roberts was the first recipient in 2011; and Jim Cole was honored last year.
The 2013 Mrs. Switzerland County will be announced and honored later in the fair week.
