Lady Pacers open Sectional play with Milan

It's basketball tournament time in Indiana, and Coach Ashley Kitts and her Switzerland County Lady Pacer varsity basketball team has been on a hot streak as tourney time nears.

This year's Class 2A tournament will be played at Milan High School, and will begin this Tuesday, February 11th. Again this year there are six teams competing at Milan.

The Lady Pacers will open Sectional play on Tuesday, February 11th, with a 6 p.m. game against the host Milan Lady Indians. Switzerland County comes into the game with a record of 11-6 (as of press time); while Milan is winless at 0-17.

Switzerland County was to play Southwestern on Tuesday night; and has games against Madison Shawe tomorrow (Friday) night and Oldenburg Academy on Saturday night. All games are weather permitting, but athletic director David Todd may have a scheduling nightmare on his hands should winter weather hit the area and force cancellations.

The second game on Tuesday night will feature North Decatur versus Austin. The Lady Chargers enter the tournament with a record of 9-7; while Austin has a record of 9-9. That game should begin at approximately 7:45 p.m.

The two Tuesday games will then take the Sectional to Friday, February 14th, where the winner of the Switzerland County-Milan game will play Southwestern in the opening semifinal game. The Lady Rebels currently hold a record of 10-10 on the year. That game will begin at 6 p.m.

Friday night's second semifinal will pit the winner of the North Decatur-Austin game against South Ripley, who has a record of 4-11. Again, the second game is expected to start at 7:45 p.m.

The two winners from Friday night will then square off for the Sectional Championship on Saturday, February 15th, with the title tilt getting underway at 7:30 p.m. Austin is the defending champion of the Sectional, with Switzerland County, Southwestern, North Decatur, and Austin all having virtually identical records, there is no favorite.

The Lady Pacers are riding a hot streak, however, having won eight of their last 10 games, including the championship of the Rivertown Classic.

In Switzerland County's first game of the year, the squad fell to Southwestern 52-45; the Lady Pacers defeated Milan on December 3rd by a score of 72-32; defeated South Ripley on December 17th by a score of 46-22; lost to North Decatur on December 21st by a score of 54-31; and earned a second victory over South Ripley on January 30th by a score of 53-40.

Switzerland County was to play Southwestern on Tuesday, February 4th, but results were not available at press time. The Lady Pacers do not play Austin during the regular season.

The winner of the Milan Sectional will then move on to the Regional tournament, which will be held at Paoli High School on Saturday, February 22nd.

The opening game of the Regional will see the winner at Forest Park play the winner at Eastern Pekin in the first game; with the winner at Milan playing the winner at North Knox in the second semifinal in the afternoon.

Tickets for the Milan Sectional will be available at the door, and are $6 for a single session ticket; or $10 for a tournament ticket that will admit the holder to all three sessions.
