Special program for Memorial Day

The Memorial Day Program for this year will be conducted by the Oscar L. Rosenberger Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5396.

It will be held at the Veterans War Memorial Monument on the grounds of the Switzerland County Courthouse, and will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 26th.

In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held at the Historic Hoosier Theater on Ferry Street.

The Vevay/Switzerland Music Club with the accompaniment of Leona Adams will provide the Prelude, National Anthem and various other patriotic music for the service.

Reverend Wayne Daugherty, Pastor of Fredonia Baptist Church, retired educator, coach, athletic director and current school board member; will offer the invocation and the memorial prayer.

The VFW ladies auxiliary treasurer, Sharon Schmitt, will recognize the POW/MIA'S with a Remembrance Prayer.

VFW Post #5396 Commander Paul Schmitt will conduct the ceremony and provide the memorial address.

"We will be departing from the traditional speech this year and change things up a bit by allowing our Veterans War Memorial to be the topic of our Memorial Day program," Paul Schmitt said. "A fellow veteran by the name of Bob Springer suggested to me sometime ago that it would be great if we could recognize each veteran listed on the monument with a balloon released in remembrance of them with their name attached. That is what we are going to do."

The VFW is inviting the relatives of Switzerland County war veterans whose names are listed on the War Memorial to attend the Memorial Day Service and participate by releasing a balloon for their relatives.

The names of Switzerland County veterans who paid the ultimate price for our freedom, will be read.

"When your relative's name is read during the ceremony, we request that you come forward and receive the balloon and proceed to the area in front of the Courthouse entrance," Paul Schmitt said. "It is our hope that all the war veterans will have some family representation, however if they do not, anyone in attendance is encouraged to participate by carrying a balloon."

The balloons will be released on command following the VFW Post #5396 and American Legion Post #185 Honor Guard's "21 Gun Salute" and just prior to the playing of 'Taps'.

The balloons will be prepared and distributed with the assistance of VFW Post #5396 ladies and men's auxiliaries.

"It is our hope that all of our Veterans who have made the supreme sacrifice for our freedom will never be forgotten. Please come out on Memorial Day and join us in the observance," Paul Schmitt said.

Following the ceremony, everyone is invited to attend a pitch in dinner at the VFW Post. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish.

The VFW Post #5396 and American Legion Post #185 will be placing Flags at the Vevay Cemetery at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 24th.

Extra flags will be placed in various locations at the cemetery in the event that the organizations may have missed a loved ones grave. If that does occur, family members are invited to use one of those.

If anyone wishes to help, they are welcome, just meet at the Vevay cemetery.

National Flag Day is coming up on June 14th. The Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held at the Switzerland County 4-H Fair Grounds at 7 p.m. that evening. Unserviceable Flags may be turned in at the American Legion Post #185 or the VFW Post #5396 prior to the ceremony.
