Schools work to make up lost days

The recent winter weather has the Switzerland County School Corporation looking at different ways of making up lost days in order to stay on the current school calendar's schedule.

Superintendent Mike Jones said that administrators have looked at a variety of ways to make up the days, including using 'Digital Make Up Days'.

So far, the school corporation has missed a total of five days (pending the possible arrival of a winter storm late this week. On Tuesday, Jones announced that if students missed school on Wednesday, February 7th, that day would become a digital make up day).

Jones said that the corporation has already made up one of those days when school was in session on Dr. Martin Luther King Day in January.

"With four days left, we're going to do a digital make up day on Monday, February 19th, which will take us down to three," Jones said. "Then, we're going to do a digital make up day on Saturday, March 10th, and then on Monday, April 2nd, which was a scheduled possible make up day, instead of doing a digital make up day, the students will actually be coming to school. I think there was a general feeling that with students being out for Spring Break, with testing and everything, it might be better to have them in school that day."

Jones said that he's been meeting with the teachers and administrators and staff to get feed back on all of the changes.

"We're going to also do a digital make up day on Saturday, May 5th," the superintendent continued. "So with missing five days: we made up one on January 15th; we're doing February 19th, March 5th, April 2nd, and May 5th. That gives us a cushion of two days that we could still do digital make up days. That's our plan right now."

Jones said that by using this make up plan will allow the corporation to finish the school year on the planned date of Thursday, May 24th.

This year's graduation ceremony has also been moved. Graduation will now be held at the high school on Saturday, May 26th, at 10:30 a.m.
