Letters to the Editor 12-12-13

Remembering Fred

Dear Editor:

About six years, our granddaughter, Lindsey, was living with us as her parents were serving our country in Iraq. Lindsey was six years old at that time.

When we would go to town and drive down the hill, we would frequently see Fred roaming the hillside. We would point out the goat to our grandaughter, but she never could find the goat as we passed by. She would say that us old folks had a big imagination.

But, one day she saw the goat, without our prodding and blurted out, "Hey, there is a goat on this hill."

To the Editor:

After reading the Vevay paper 11/28/13 edition front page about several county and elected officials and their reliance on God and family and that's a good thing. Then I read the back page article where school board members unanimously approved a plan to provide breakfast for every child in the school corporation for December because a good breakfast is key to a student's "success." I thought my head was going to explode. Here's why I say that.

The director says breakfast for children will help our students and help the school corporation test scores and I thought, follow the money. The better scores means more "money." I don't know that for sure, just asking. What's next, we buy their clothes and cars for the high school students and how about a new home for those who don't have an updated home according to the school board.

And then I thought - Shazam - why not give them the answers to the test. That would really give them a good test score, good for the student and the short term, but bad for their future when the student can't depend on someone else or the government. And no one on the school board voted against it. Really.

Then I thought this is the parents' responsibility and don't experts tell us that meal time is a good time to bond with your children and isn't that what children want, your time? What does this teach these children when they have children that someone else will take care of your responsibilities for you?

In conclusion I would say our forefathers and grandparents and some parents would be rolling in their graves and would call this situation a "soft tyranny of low expectations." I'll explain. They think the parents of these children are too busy or not wise enough to feed their own children breakfast so the food service director suggests we will do it for them. I know there are some children in the county who need some assistance, but not all of them.

Where are the churches in the county to help address this problem? Isn't that part of what churches do? As a former parent and still one I urge parents in the county to say no to this asinine idea and say we will do the job ourselves. If my children were still in Switzerland County Schools I would not only say no I would say, hell no.

Parents of the county, your children and country's future is at stake. I know I will catch a lot of flak for this letter but at my age and stage of life it's like Rhett Butler said to Scarlet in Gone With the Wind - "Frankly my dear, I don't give a d - - n."

Help with project

Dear Editor:

I am currently working on a musical album for a project at school. I love music and it's always been my dream to release an album, so now with the opportunity I finally am. My reason for writing though is I need one idea for a cover song to sing and record for the album. I have almost all my songs written although it's all very much still a big 'work in progress'. Two cover songs will go on the album. One of the two is already picked and will remain a secret until we get closer to the release date, which I'm hoping I can finish from my estimations mid to late February or I'm not sure it could be earlier. Only time will tell to all this.

The album is being named 7even, it mostly contains inspirational humanitarian based themed singles, but also has a single on grief and another on following your heart and dreams, most of it though is an inspiration album and will be full of songs everyone will love. There is a song written for every person that I'm sure everyone can relate to. The album itself is going to be pretty low priced at $5. Selling locations haven't been planned just yet, but I will inform everyone when that is figured out into situation. By the way the album is a many genre album using pop to rock and all of music types. So to the readers please if you can write into the editor here with a song, the artist who originally sings it, and why you think it would be a good song to have put on the album or you can email me at my email address I created and am using only for this project at ryan.curry00@yahoo.com if you have internet and email, use whatever works best for you.

I hope to get lots of write ins for this.

With this I'm incorporating my wonderful community with my musical work and talent. God bless you all and truly thanks from the bottom of my heart!.
