Phyllis Swick

Phyllis Marie (Heckaman) Swick, age 77, of Pierceton, Indiana passed away Friday November 23rd, 2012 at 11 p.m. Indiana Grace Village Health Care, Winona Lake, Indiana.

She was born April 9th, 1935 Indiana Kosciusko County, Indiana, to Forrest and Anna Marie (Heyde) Heckaman. She was a graduate 1953 of Burket High School.

On June 2nd, 1953 in Silver Lake, Indiana she was united in marriage to Lowell Swick.

She had 25 years of service with the United States Postal Service and retired in 1995 as the Pierceton, Indiana Postmaster. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Pierceton, Indiana; the National Association of Postmasters of the United States; and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include her husband Lowell Swick of Pierceton, Indiana; sons Terry L. (spouse Patty) Swick of Angola, Indiana and Thomas J. (spouse Sue) Swick of Lee's Summit, Missouri; daughters Debra D. (spouse Mike) Archer of Vevay, Indiana and Donna D. (spouse Tom) Balazs of Winona Lake, Indiana; and siblings Seward Heckaman, Rosemary Williamson, Maxine Taylor, Doyle Heckaman, Karen Bucher and Diane Bedic.

In addition, she is survived by 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services are scheduled for Wednesday November 28th, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Calling hours were scheduled for 4-8 p.m., Tuesday November 27th, 2012 at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel in Warsaw, Indiana.

Also, calling will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Brenda Fritz will officiate the services. Internment will be Indiana Hillcrest Cemetery Pierceton, Indiana.

Eugene Smith

Eugene Smith, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, November 21st, 2012, at the Harrison County Hospital in Cynthiana, Kentucky.

Eugene was born in 1918 in Franklin, Ohio. He graduated from Withrow High School in Cincinnati in 1936. He ran track and played baseball at Withrow. He attended and received his bachelor of arts degree from Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky.

After college and the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and wanted to be a fighter pilot. He flew with the famed Tuskegee Airmen and escorted bombers on many missions including the raid on Hitler's oilfields in Ploesti, Romania. After he completed his missions he was a flight instructor for the Tuskegee Airmen for the rest of his enlistment.

After World War II, Eugene attended law School at the Franklin College of Law in Columbus, Ohio on the G.I. Bill. He practiced law in Cincinnati for over 50 years. He had many big cases including orally arguing a first amendment case before the United States Supreme Court. Eugene served as the Chief Trial Lawyer in the Hamilton County Ohio Public Defender's Office for several years. During this time he led the at the time controversial efforts to integrate juries in the county.

After retirement in the early 1990's Eugene moved to Florence, Indiana where he lived out his retirement on a houseboat at the Turtle Creek Marina. He enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens Mealsite in Vevay, reading, and visiting with friends. He was a member of the Patriot Baptist Church.

A memorial service will be held on a date to be announced at the Patriot Baptist Church. Eugene is survived by three children and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.



Clyde Eldridge

Clyde Eldridge, 77, of Rising Sun, passed away at 7:23 a.m. Thursday, November 22nd, 2012, at Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg.

He was born in Gander, Kentucky, on April 17th, 1935, the son of the late Colonel and Angeline (Caudill) Eldridge. He was a graduate of Moores Hill High School Class of 1954. He worked as a supervisor at Pierson-Holowell in Lawrenceburg, retired.

On March 17th, 1979, he married Clara Marie (Grim) Eldridge, who survives.

Other survivors include his four daughters, Gladys Thompson of Batesville, Brenda Grim (Kenneth) of Lawrenceburg, Lois Lundsford of Vevay, and Karen Lane of Aurora; his three sons, Clyde A. Eldridge of Milan, Eric Eldridge (Rebecca) of Rising Sun, and Adam Eldridge of Rising Sun; his stepson, Bo Ramey (Melissa) of Moores Hill; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; his sister, Ila Richards of North Carolina; his two brothers, Kenneth Eldridge of Sunman and Clinton Eldridge of Batesville.

He was also preceded in death by his sister Gertrude.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family or Ohio County Rescue. Markland Funeral Home of Rising Sun serving the family. marklandfuneralhome.com.



Ralph Tucker

Ralph Tucker, 78, of Vevay, passed away at 12:18 p.m. Wednesday, November 21st, 2012, at King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison.

He was born December 12th, 1933, in Madison, the loving son of the late George Dewey and Muriel (Romans) Tucker. He was raised in Vevay and attended Vevay High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 29th, 1952, in Indianapolis, rising to the rank of Private, serving during the Korean War. He served in Head Quarter Company 41st Armored Infantry Battalion, receiving the Army of Occupation Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged and transferred to the Army Reserves on April 15th, 1955, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserves on December 16th, 1957. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy on April 8th, 1958, rising to the rank of Gunner's Mate G First Class during the Vietnam War, retiring on February 1st, 1982. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.

He was united in marriage on August 26th, 1959, in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, to Kathleen Annette Wynkoop. They shared 53 years of marriage together until his death.

He was a life member of the Vevay VFW Post 5396. He owned and operated Tucker's Woodcraft shop in Vevay from 1983 to 2012. He will be remembered for his love of woodworking. He was a loving husband, brother and uncle.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Kathleen Annette (Wynkoop) Tucker of Vevay; his two sisters, Geneva Green of Vevay and Sue Armstrong of Greensburg; his brother, Kenny Tucker of Vevay; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Donald Tucker; his niece, Adinna Devon Armstrong; his two nephews, Shawn Lee Armstrong and Brian Tucker; and his brother-in-law, Duane V. Armstrong.

Funeral services were conducted by Reverend Ronald Sandidge Monday, November 26th, at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Vevay Cemetery with full military graveside rites conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post 185 and Vevay VFW Post 5396.
