Betty West Smith Garland

Betty Jo (Carlton) West-Smith-Garland, age 69, of Vevay, passed away at 2:37 a.m. on Thursday, September 7th, 2017, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay.

Betty entered this life on April 21st, 1948, in Bennington, the daughter of the late Ray and Naomi (Morris) Carlton. She was raised in Switzerland County, where she was a 1968 graduate of the Vevay High School.

Betty was united in marriage on May 3rd, 1984, in Dillsboro, to Leland Ray "Dick" Wes,t and they shared nine years of marriage together until he passed away on December 11th, 1993. She was later united in marriage on July 9th, 1996 at the Fairview Baptist Church, to Frederick Richard "Rick" Smith, and they shared 12 years of marriage together until he passed away on April 26th, 2008.

Betty was later united in marriage on June 9th, 2016, at the Swiss Villa Nursing Home in Vevay, to Harold Garland. Betty and Harold shared over one year of marriage together until her death.

Betty was employed as the 911 coordinator for the Switzerland County Sheriff's Department, retiring in November of 2005, after 16 years of service. Betty was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church in Fairview. She enjoyed collecting dolls, clothes and attending yard sales.

Betty will be dearly missed by her husband: Harold Garland of Vevay; by her daughters: Sheila Alcorn and her husband: Sherman of Louisville, Kentucky and Patricia O'Bryant of Louisville, Kentucky; her son: Kenneth Russell, Sr. of Louisville, Kentucky; by her daughter-in-law: Bonnie Russell of Madison, Indiana; by her grandchildren: Marlena Alcorn, William Steven Russell, Chase Damrow and Becky Justice; her brother: Brother Wayne Carlton of East Enterprise; her dear friend, Irene Martin of Bennington; and her numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Ray and Naomi (Morris) Carlton; by her first husband: Leland Ray "Dick" West, who died on December 11th, 1993; her second husband, Frederick Richard "Rick" Smith, who died on April 26th, 2008; by her grandson: Kenneth Lee Russell, Jr., who died on May 11th, 2006; by her sisters: Mary Jane Carlton and Evangeline Hazelip; and her brother: Brother Eugene Carlton.

Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, September 9th, 2017, by Brother Hobert Byrd, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043. Interment followed in the Vevay Cemetery.

Friends were invited to call on the family on Saturday prior to the beginning of the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fairview Baptist Church. Cards are available at the funeral home.







Sylvia Colen

Sylvia Firth Colen, age 83, of Madison, died on Thursday, September 7th, 2017, at 12:30 p.m. at the Kentuckiana Medical Center in Clarksville, Indiana with her loving family at her side.

Sylvia entered this life on September 16th, 1933 in Brooksburg, Indiana. She was the only daughter of Graham T. and Georgia Kidwell Firth. She was raised in Brooksburg and was a member of the Brooksburg United Methodist Church.

In 1951 she graduated from Central High School on Ryker's Ridge, where she made many lasting friendships.

On November 22nd, 1952 Sylvia was united in marriage to Robert Crandell. This union was blessed with a daughter, Bonnie and a son, Denny. The family lived and resided in Moorefield on the family farm.

Sylvia served as a bookkeeper for many years for Volz Chevrolet, Brogan's, Croxton's and Casteel Chevrolet. She also worked as an administrative assistant at Farm Bureau for several years. Sylvia retired from working as a greeter at the Madison Wal-Mart.

She was united in marriage on December 8th, 2009 to James Melvin "Jake" Colen at their home on Copeland Ridge near Canaan by Reverend Ron Mundy.

Sylvia loved horses and began riding at an early age. She belonged to the Switzerland County Saddle Club, Moorefield Homemaker's Club, Dorcas Circle of King's Daughters', Friendly Circle at Brooksburg, and attended Long Run Baptist Church near Moorefield. Sylvia loved antique shopping and being with her devoted cousin, Mary Bette, if you saw one of them more than likely the other was right there as well.

Sylvia was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of 14 and suffered the pain of the dreaded disease for the rest of her life. She never complained and kept a smile on her face and if you noticed her pain she would apologize for it. Family was of the most importance to Sylvia, she was a precious Mother, devoted Wife, loving Mamaw and Mamaw Sylvia. She enjoyed working with the public and her career influenced her love for people and the smile that always shown brightly on her face. She will be remembered by many for her sweetness and kindnesses she expressed everyday of her life.

Sylvia will be missed by her loving daughter, Bonnie Colen and her husband, Jimmy of Madison; her loving son, Denny Crandell and his wife, Shawn of Madison; her loving grandchildren: Kevin Dale Colen; Kyle Robert Colen and his wife, Sara; Kristopher "Kris" James Colen and his wife, Jennifer; and Robert Scott Crandell; and by her adoring great grandchildren: Addy Colen, Eli Colen and Leland Robert Colen.

He will also be deeply missed by her step mother, Mina Firth of Hanover; her half sisters: Linda Shimfessel and her husband, Gary of Brooksburg, Indiana; Wanda Thacker and her husband, Ron of Madison; by her best friend and cousin that was raised like a sister, Mary Bette Voyles of Canaan, Indiana; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father, Graham T. Firth, who died on July 28th, 1995; her mother, Georgia F. Kidwell Firth Adams, who died on May 15th, 1995; her step father, James Perry Adams, who died on May 10th, 1982; and her husband, James Melvin "Jake" Colen, who died on July 18th, 2015.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, September 11th, 2017, by Pastor Mike Hamby at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment followed in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1415 North Gate Road in Madison.

Friends were invited to call on the family on Sunday, September 10th, and on Monday prior to the beginning of the services at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund in her memory. Cards are available at the funeral home.





Bonnie Scudder

Bonnie Alice (Mays) Scudder, age 52, of Vevay, passed away at 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12th, 2017, at her residence in Vevay.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana.





Joyce Sokoloski

Joyce Ann Sokoloski of Burien, Washington, passed away on September 6, 2017 surrounded by her family in Washington state.

Joyce was born in Vevay on February 28th, 1942. She attended school in a one room school house until she moved to Vevay High School in town. After graduating she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she enlisted in the Marine Corps for three years. She was stationed in Fort Pendleton, California, where she met Duane Sokoloski who was also a Marine.

They fell in love, and were married on September 17th,1966 in Seattle, Washington, where they raised the boys. Joyce and Duane celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary September 17th, 2016.

Joyce was a devoted mother, going to many of Mike and Kevin's sporting events and was a big influence on the careers that Michael and Kevin chose. She adored her grandchildren and always had big hugs and a patient ear when they wanted to talk. 

Joyce spent time as a stay-at-home mom, and earned her degree in accounting at Highline Community College. She worked as the office manager at a retirement park for many years, where she eventually retired. She enjoyed baking and was an avid reader. In 1984, along with her sisters, mother, and her Aunt Jean, she took a real "girls trip" to Hawaii - with lots of laughs and gossip. It was a highlight for all, especially for Joyce's mother, who had never traveled on an airplane.

Joyce took many trips including a cruise to Alaska, Yellowstone, and Cannon Beach, Oregon, along with summer road trips to Montana and Indiana to visit family, which were very important to her. Joyce will forever be remembered as the loving wife, mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law.

She is survived by her husband Duane; son Michael and wife Kim of Newcastle, Washington and grandchildren: Jake and Kyla; her son Kevin and wife Laura from Normandy Park, Washington and grandchildren: David and Ryan.

She is also survived by sisters Pamala Reed of Castle Rock, Colorado and Francis Laverne Craig of Rising Sun; by brothers: Marvin Richard Reed of Peru, Indiana; Ronald Reed of Bennington; and Mark Reed of Vevay.

Joyce was proceeded in death by brother Kenneth Randall Reed; and her father and mother, Henry and Alberta Reed of Vevay.  

A memorial service will be on Tuesday, September 26th, 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis Church, Burien, Washington.

Donations in her honor may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.  Neptune Society Funeral Home is assisting the family at this difficult time.
