Kay E. Cook
Patriot

On June 5th, 2006 I received a written invitation to attend the Patriot Baptist Church by "My Friends in Christ" Janett Boling, Carol Ann Armstrong, Mary Ellen Waltz, Vernon Waltz, Jean Rose, Roy Boling, Dorothy Burley, Michael Jones, Marlene Jones, Basil Armstrong and Jean Romans. Yes, that was 11 years ago and yes, I still have the letter with all of their signatures. And yes, I consider those people among "My" Friends in Christ. I had only been in Patriot since April when I first purchased my home on Front Street. I was very touched by their kindness and I am very grateful for their friendship.

In the "Lessons Learned" category, I have two contributions this week. First off, if you are going to wear your glasses when you put your dishes away, you had probably have them on when you first wash 'em.

Secondly, I am borrowing from my cousin Marie who is exhausted most of the time as she is the primary caregiver for her 88 year old mother. Having laid her vitamins out one morning while she was more asleep than awake, she took the pills and immediately began choking. She ended up in the Emergency Room with a complete work up. The culprit? She had accidentally taken one of the capsules packed in the vitamins by the manufacturer to keep her pills dry!

My Hats Off to the Concordia Ladies on their very successful yard sale at the Concord Community Church! They include: Mary Christiani, Bonnie Schreiner, Sharon Ward, Sharon Coplen, Lulu Belle Thomas, Joann Hon, Janice Widner, and Wanda Benzing. I went back the last day and was still able to find some very good bargains. I understand they are planning one more sale later this fall.

Hats off to the Patriot baseball team! I have not as yet been able to obtain the particulars (roster, names, number of wins) but I understand that they have won four straight!

Hats off also to my favorite Fashionista Josie Hoagland! Carol Ann Armstrong attended her rodeo competition Saturday in Salem and Josie finished fourth in both of her competitions. Carol Ann then when home with daughter Angie and helped put up 200 bales of hay. Sunday morning, they all attended the Deer Creek Baptist Church in Tell City.

Speaking of horses, Sunday afternoon I was on my front porch when my neighbor Robin Lawson and our friend Kassidy Widner rode up Front Street on their two beautiful horses!

My preference in horsepower however is a bit different. Last Thursday if you had been around Garfield Park in Indianapolis, you might have seen me riding with my friend Bill Estes on his pearl white Spyder! He calls it his three-wheeled Cadillac complete with power steering! These Spyders now are quite the craze especially for those of us of a more 'mature' nature. It's a three wheeled motorcycle-type vehicle designed for stability. No kickstand! Can't fall over. Almost like being in a small convertible with no doors! Even with my bad shoulders, I could handle one of these so as soon as I win the lottery, you will see me on a red one!

Now that I have no excuse not to read, I read nearly every day. So in addition to being a member of the Switzerland County Book Club, I am also participating in the Adult Summer Reading Program. I am to select one sentence from each book I read during this time (June 5th until July 15th) and I place it in a box at the Library. Everyone's sentences are then to be submitted to the Writing Club who will make it into a story! How fun! And it's free! Any book counts but if you are interested in adding to your personal library, I understand the Library will have their Book Sale this week starting Thursday June 15th and ending Saturday June 17th.

The Switzerland County Shelter Shuffle is this Saturday, June 17 also! Look for the Red HOT Hatters on the T-shirts as Platinum Level Sponsors!

Donations of household items, books, clothes and et cetera are also being accepted by the Red HOT Hatters for the County Wide Yard Sale, also to be held this Saturday, June 17th. Look for us to be set up around the county courthouse! For pick up, contact Kay Cook at (812) 594-2281. Please price your donations. All monies will be donated to the Antoinette "Toni" Kniola Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation.

Prayers are still needed for Bill Levell and now Sharon, too, Wayne Dawson (Sandy's husband), Tony Christiani and Ron Moenter.

You may contact me several ways: by leaving a note of message inside the cat mailbox in front of 1995 Front Street in Patriot, OR by calling my home at (812) 594-2281; or dropping me a note at P.O. Box #01, Patriot, Indiana, 47038. In addition, contact KAY E COOK on Facebook or online at PatriotNews1995@gmail.com. If you have anything for me to include in this article, please send it to me. Information can be received any day of the week but normally my deadline is Sunday at noon for that week's issue of the paper. Any news received later will appear in the following week's article. If you need something in on a particular date be sure and give it to me early. Thank you for sending me what you do every week - I couldn't do this without you!
