A great big Thank You to the deputies of the Switzerland County Sheriff's Office for showing up 'in force' at the Patriot 'Trunk N Treat' on Halloween! The intersection was festive enough but the lights from the Patriot Volunteer Fire Department apparatus along with all of the Sheriff's cars present, really was impressive! The cold kept this Goblin home, but I did sneak up to catch a glimpse from a distance at the festivities. This was the second year for the event and hopefully will not be the last.

My social calendar continues to deteriorate. Between working and sleeping crazy hours and getting the 'AM' and 'PM' button backwards on my alarm clock, now that we've changed time again - it will probably take me a month or so to get acclimated!

The next meeting of the Local Emergency Planning Committee is scheduled for Thursday, November 16th, at the TEC Center at 11 a.m. This will be a very important meeting. Topics to be addressed are confirmation of the committee's membership, election of officers, acceptance of by-laws, establishing the 2018 meeting calendar and the planning and execution of annual exercises.

Tentatively, the November meeting of the Red HOT Hatters has been scheduled for Thursday, November 16th at Shell's beginning at 11 a.m. and hopefully the next day, there will also be planned attendance at the Hoosier Theater for the play on Friday, November 17th. Specifics to be determined.

Plans are also underway for the Red HOT Hatter Christmas luncheon at Patty's Reach on Monday, December 11th. Anyone wishing to attend may do so by contacting Kay Cook at (812) 594-2281 prior to December 4th.

It has been decided that beginning in 2018, all Red HOT Hatter monthly meetings will occur on the third Thursday of the month at 11 a.m. The January 18th, 2018 meeting is planned for Jewell's on Main in Warsaw, Kentucky.

Prayers of healing to Pam Hutchinson, Mary Ruth Poling, Colton Schirmer, Mary Christiani, Erin Schmitt, Leona Ware, Travis Griffith, Wayne Dawson and June Lack.

In the "Lessons Learned" category this week, I am less eager to spend money directly deposited into my checking account that I am spending currency I can carry and so easily spread around. All my income now - my pension, my social security and now my paycheck - have been reduced simply to numbers on a computer. I remember when getting paid involved the exchange of a piece of paper issued by my employer with someone at the bank who very pleasantly replaced it with a stack of actual U.S. currency. Real money. With real coins. Alas! Slowly but surely, I have learned not to carry the real stuff with me anymore. It seems to disappear so much faster when I carry it in my wallet. Likewise, the use of credit cards and checking accounts have made spending money so much easier. Numbed by the ease of giving money away without ever seeing or holding it, I think I lose track of my expenditures so much more easily. At least that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it!

In the "Critter Corner" this week, I am still working with the feral Scaredy Cat. I am spending more time observing than pursuing the little cat now. I have, therefore, deduced that "it" is a "she". My basis for that decision is the part of her body she introduces to my Terrible Two Tomcats when they meet.

You may contact me several ways: by leaving a note of message inside the cat mailbox in front of 1995 Front Street in Patriot; or by calling my home at (812)594-2281; or dropping me a note at P.O. Box #01, Patriot, Indiana, 47038. In addition, contact KAY E COOK on Facebook or online at PatriotNews1995@gmail.com. If you have anything for me to include in this article, please send it to me. Information can be received any day of the week but normally my deadline is Sunday at noon for that week's issue of the paper. Any news received later will appear in the following week's article. If you need something in a particular issue please be sure and give it to me early.
