My mother used to say the worst thing about getting old was losing your friends and family. I think I know what she meant. These past few weeks have been far too tragic for far too many of my friends and even members of my own family. Along with my condolences and prayers, I am including these words hopefully for comfort:

"Those we love don't go away,

they walk beside us every day.

Unseen, unheard but always near,

still loved, still missed, and held so dear."

Although I have never really been a fan of the Super Bowl, I have enjoyed the camaraderie the game has brought to friends and family in the past. This year, with all the turmoil over political correctness and the true meaning of patriotism, I choose to eat my goodies and drink my liquid refreshments alone, with the television off and a good book in my hand. As noted, the military wear uniforms, football players wear costumes. Its not that hard for me to understand whom I need to respect and honor.

Mark your calendar: Ash Wednesday this year falls on Valentine's Day (February 14th) and Easter falls on April Fool's Day (April 1st). Ash Wednesday services will therefore be held at 4 p.m. at the Most Sorrowful Mother of God Catholic Church on February 14th.

Prayers of healing for Fritz Korn, Teresa Winters, John Campbell, Jake Rader, Pam Hutchinson, Colton Schirmer, Erin Schmitt, Leona Ware, Travis Griffith, Wayne Dawson, Sondra Stave, Peggy Higgins and June Lack.

The next meeting of the Patriot Town Board will be Tuesday, February 6th at 6 p.m. The meetings are held at the Patriot Town Hall located at 352 3rd Street. All meetings are open to the public.

The next meeting of the Red HOT Hatters is scheduled for Mo's Restaurant in Vevay on Thursday, February 15th at noon and will be a "Red HOT Valentine Extravaganza". This is a deviation from the normal meeting time so please take note of the later hour. Everyone is invited - bring a friend and/or a relative. Wear a red hat or no hat at all. Wear purple, pink or bright green. We don't care, we just love to have fun! Feel free to bring a gift for exchange valued between $5 and $10 but not required. Just come! Anyone with questions, may contact Kay Cook at (812) 594-2281.

The Switzerland County Republicans will hold their 2018 Lincoln Day Dinner at Belterra Casino Resort and Spa on Saturday, March 24th. Tickets will be $50 per person, $90 per couple and $450 for a table of 8. Information about advertising and purchasing tickets is forthcoming.

In the "Lessons Learned" category this week, my doctor was kind enough to assist me in my pursuit of reality versus perception at my appointment last week. Reality may be a rather rude awakening but necessary. What I was perceiving as progress, he tells me is not. So, I'm back to square one and anxiously awaiting his appraisal next month.

In the "Critter Corner" this week, I am learning that one never assumes anything about feral cats. For instance, do not assume that adult feral cats regardless of their maturity have been neutered or spayed. Translated: Ms. Feral Kitty aka Scaredy Cat is apparently 'unaltered'. She's currently being 'quarantined'. So just in case you see her begging in front of the windows of my house or hear her 'cries' of desperation, she is not being abused or mistreated. The Two Terrible Twin Tomcats, however, having been neutered are completely clueless.

As always, I encourage people to contact me with their local news. You may contact me several ways: by leaving a note or message inside the cat mailbox in front of 1995 Front Street in Patriot; or by calling my home at (812) 594-2281; or dropping me a note at P.O. Box #01, Patriot, Indiana, 47038. In addition, contact KAY E COOK on Facebook or online at PatriotNews1995@gmail.com. If you have anything for me to include in this article, please send it to me. Information can be received any day of the week but normally my deadline is Sunday at noon for that week's issue of the paper. Any news received later will appear in the following week's article. If you need something in a particular issue, please be sure and give it to me early.
