Boys, girls cross country teams move on with strong Sectional efforts

Both the boys and girls cross country teams from Switzerland County High School advanced to the Regional meet after strong showings in the Sectional, which was held on Tuesday, October 15th, at Hanover College.

In the boys race, the Pacers finished fifth overall with a team score of 125. Madison won the Sectional with 58 points; with Jennings County second with 70 points. Silver Creek was third with 74 points; and Henryville finished fourth with 116 points.

Austin finished sixth; Scottsburg was seventh; New Washington came in eighth; Southwestern was ninth; and Madison Shawe finished 10th.

Individually, it was a great day for Pacer Talen Taylor. The junior was right in the thick of things throughout the entire race, finishing an impressive second overall with a time of 16:52.81 - just behind race champion Jonah Woods of Jennings County (16:47.62).

Senior Braden Burk, still battling injuries, finished 10th overall in the Sectional in a time of 18:04.06; and Sean Oatman finished 29th overall in a time of 19:20.50.

Jordan Lay finished 38th overall in a time of 19:58.08; Colton Penick finished 54th in a time of 21:38.30; Michael Scott was 61st in a time of 22:34.49; and Cameron Papucci finished 64th overall in a time of 23:09.21.

In the girls race, the Lady Pacers also advanced with a fifth place overall finish. Switzerland County recorded a team score of 120.

Silver Creek claimed the Sectional Championship with a score of 31; followed by Madison with 98; Southwestern with 100; and Charlestown with 114.

After Switzerland County, Jennings County finished sixth; Henryville was seventh; and New Washington was ninth.

Freshman Whitley Schirmer again led the way for Switzerland County, continuing her outstanding season with a fifth place overall finish in a time of 20:45.24.

Robin Furnish also had a great race, coming home in 11th place overall with a time of 21:50.34.

Melissa Furnish finished 31st overall in a time of 24:39.37; Cameron Ray finished 34th overall in a time of 24:57.20; Audrey Kinne finished 47th overall in a time of 28:52.90; and Adeli Kinne finished 57th overall in a time of 33:28.59.
