Young Pacer wrestling team is excelling

The 2013 Switzerland County High School wrestling season is well under way.

The Pacer team this year is a young team with only two seniors on the squad. The seniors are: Chase Richards and Aleyshia Jones.

There are three juniors on the team: Tylor Thomas, Alex Herbert, and Dakota Godwin. The lone sophomore is Luke Birch; and the team has five freshmen: Austin Dennis, Dalton Woodward, Casper Stow, Rio Gonzales, and Cody Wilson.

This is the first year for the high school team to see freshmen on the team who have been through the little league program, the middle school program, and now starting their high school career.

Austin Dennis and Rio Gonzales have been through all three programs. Dalton Woodward and Casper Stow have also been through the middle school program.

The middle school coach (Mark Jackson) has done a great job coaching and teaching these young athletes.

This young pacer wrestler team is showing that it is team to be taken seriously for many years to come.

The Pacers traveled to New Washington on December 28th for a six-team invitational tournament. The Pacers performed well during the tournament, with two wrestlers going undefeated for the day.

Alex Herbert in the 180-pound class and Tylor Thomas in the 220-pound class both went 5-0 for the tournament.

The Pacer team traveled to Salem High School on January 4th for a seven-team invitational tournament.

The Pacers battled hard during the long day of wrestling, with four wrestlers earning medals.

Luke Birch, wrestling in the 285-pound class, earned a first place medal in the tournament; while Dalton Woodward (120-pound class) and Tyler Thomas (220-pound class) brought home second place medals.

Chase Richards (160-pound class) earned a third place medal.

The Pacer wrestling team travels to Madison High School this Saturday January 11th for a six-team tournament.

Switzerland County's first home meet of the year will be on Tuesday January 14th at 6 p.m. against Salem High School.
