Pacers enter Sectional play this Tuesday against host Southwestern

Coach B.J. McAlister and his Switzerland County Pacer varsity boys basketball team is ranked 14th in Class 2A in the state this week, but none of that matters beginning this Tuesday, as the IHSAA State Tournament gets underway.

This year's Class 2A Sectional #45 will be played at Southwestern High School.

The first game of the Sectional will be played Tuesday night, March 4th, at 6 p.m., and will feature North Decatur (4-14) and Austin (9-10).

The second game on Tuesday evening, set to begin at approximately 7:30 p.m., will pit defending champion Switzerland County (16-3) against the host Southwestern Rebels (0-19).

Those games will then line up the semifinals, which will be played on Friday night, March 7th. The first semifinal that night at 6 p.m. will see the winner of the North Decatur-Austin game play South Ripley (9-10); with the second game seeing the Switzerland County-Southwestern winner playing Milan (13-6).

Friday night's two winners will then play for the Sectional championship on Saturday night, March 8th, with tip off at 7:30 p.m.

The winner of the Southwestern Sectional will then advance to play in the Regional, which will again be played at Southridge High School near Jasper. The Regional will be held on Saturday, March 15th.

In the opening game of the Regional, which will begin at 11 a.m., the winner of the North Knox Sectional will play the winner of the Boonville Sectional. The second game of the first session will have the winner at Southwestern playing the winner of the Paoli Sectional. That game will begin at approximately 1 p.m.

The two winners in the day session will play for the Regional championship at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 15th.

Again this year the Southridge Regional looks to be a powerhouse.

The Paoli Sectional features Clarksville (16-2) and Crawford County (16-3), but those two squads will meet in the opening round on Tuesday night, so one of them is going home early. Also at Paoli is Providence (12-5), Paoli (11-7), Eastern Pekin (5-13), and Henryville (3-15).

In the North Knox Sectional, it looks to be a three-team race.

Sullivan comes in with a record of 15-5, but South Knox (14-5) and defending champion Linton-Stockton (14-5) are right behind. If on of those teams should falter, look for North Knox (13-7) to make a charge. Also there are Eastern Greene (9-11) and North Central Farmersburg (5-11).

The third sectional feeding into Southridge is Boonville, where defending champion Perry Central, last year's foe versus Switzerland County in the Regional, comes in with a record of 14-5 and appears to be the clear favorite for a return trip to the Regional.

Also there are South Spencer (12-8), Evansville Mater Dei (10-8), Forest Park (10-10), North Posey (5-14), and Tell City (5-14).

The winner of the Southridge Regional will then go to the Semistate Tournament, which will either be played at Seymour or at Richmond on Saturday, March 22nd. The state tournament will be held in Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday, March 29th.

Other conference and area schools will also be playing in the Sectional Tournament:

- In Class 3A Sectional #30 at North Harrison, Madison (13-4) will play Silver Creek (12-5) on Wednesday, March 5th, at 7:30 p.m.

The North Harrison Sectional is a tough road for the Cubs, with Corydon Central (17-2) and Brownstown Central (16-3) also in that tourney.

- In Class 3A Sectional #29 at Greensburg, South Dearborn (3-17) has the honor of playing defending State Champion, top rated, and Sectional host Greensburg (20-1) on Tuesday night, March 4th, at 6 p.m.

Tuesday's second game at Greensburg is an interesting match up, as Lawrenceburg (10-9) will play Rushville (8-9), which is coached by former Pacer mentor Brian Bowen.

- In Class 1A Sectional #60 at South Decatur, Rising Sun (4-14) will play Madison Shawe (1-18) in the first game on Tuesday, March 4th, at 6 p.m.

Jac-Cen-Del (9-9) will also play in the South Decatur Sectional, and the Eagles drew a bye, playing the winner of the Hauser (9-9)-Oldenburg Academy (10-7) game on Friday, March 7th, at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Southwestern Sectional at $6 for a single session; or a $10 ticket will admit you to all three sessions. Switzerland County athletic director David Todd will have tickets available at the high school through this Monday, March 3rd, at 3 p.m.; and they will also be available at tomorrow (Friday) night's regular season finale at home against Madison. Tickets will also be available at the door.
